‘Abbott Elementary’ season 2 premiere ratings hold steady

After much love for the Emmys, the ABC sitcom “Abbott Elementary” was back in session on Wednesday with a season 2 premiere that kept pace with its freshman finale last spring.

According to data from Nielsen’s Live + Same Day, season 2 episode 1 averaged a 0.5 rating among adults 18-49 and 2.8 million total viewers, tying it with the season premiere of “The Conners.” for ABC’s top-rated show during primetime on Wednesday.

That marks a strong start to the new school year for “Abbott Elementary,” which earned a 0.6 rating and 2.8 million total viewers on comparable Nielsen metrics for its Season 1 finale in April.

In fact, the second-season premiere of “Abbott” was able to hold steady with the first-season premiere, which aired on the heels of Jimmy Kimmel and Norman Lear’s third special “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” and earned a 0.6 rating and 2.9 million total viewers.

And if Nielsen’s performance for the second season of “Abbott” is anything like the first, it will continue to grow outside the “Live” window, especially when it comes to appealing to younger viewers: after 35 days of online viewing and digital platforms like Hulu, “Abbott Elementary” season 1 averaged 8.11 million total viewers and a 2.73 rating, according to ABC.

The first season of “Abbott Elementary” received seven Emmy nominations and took home three awards in all, including one for creator and star Quinta Brunson for comedy writing, one for the show’s casting, and one for supporting actress Sheryl. Lee Ralph.
